What's your view on the present state of Hip Hop?

Personally, hip-hop has always been about creation, more or less taking it to another level.Although, lately I haven't seen to many strides to create with the exception of a choosen few. I guess the big question is who do you feel has try to make an impact toward keeping the tradition alive and who hasn't?

Well for starters, SANKOFA is an Akan word that means, one must return to the past in order to move forward. Thats all I was saying is that we can reflect and be influenced and use the past to advance it. I understand where your coming from. But I'm refering to those who just recycle as a way to get props and show no love for the origin. It's okay to reflect back to the past but you can't go back to live there. As for the you made, "People will create, and people will also create from an original invention". You got a beautiful perception on music and life stay wise Angelina. Peace

I dunno I guess it's all in how you view it!! I think some hip-hop may not be on the traditional hip-hop scale but it's still hip-hop ya'know?! I was raised mostly on west coast gangsta rap like N.W.A. an all that so to me I see the hip-hop in the music from a different view! Like I think Nas still does hip-hop an so does Kanye but one of the cats im feelin the most (or I can relate to the most) now an days is a slept on cat named Ray-Cash!

One thing that I thought I'd never see is rappers downplaying the art of it. I think the more that happens, the more dudes in the business seem to take this hip hop music for granted. And then, we have knuckleheads who just follow their example. Its not about being concious and etc. Its just about these emcees and everything just playing this whole artform to be a bit to ignorant and just a means to make money. They'll cry once they realize the industry's screwed a bit and they may not get that money like they wish could've.

Hiphop has been taken over by the desire to make loads of money. Now that hiphop has become mainstream ie "Pop"ular, the labels invest huge amounts of money on marketing and image. Their primary interest is what will shift the most units, which generally isnt whats good for the music form. Hiphop is now corporate, along with the rest of the US and also here in the UK. We are in the corporate world where profit overules common sense, decency even our childrens futures. After a label has invested so much they need to make a lot back just to break even. Thats why they put out what they do and dont put out what they should, because they know it sells. It doesnt matter if the kids growing up see that the way to make it is to be a gangster, the need to make loads of money overules common values. We live in the consumer world now, and hiphop has become part of the consumer world that it should never have been a part of. We are sold illusions in the media(all types, not just hiphop) that success is how much you own, how big your house is, what car you drive.
I say what about the neighbourhoods? Are they becoming nicer places to live? No.
Is crime going down? No. Is drug use on the decline? No.
Are our rights still dwindling away? Yes
Is education failing the youth? Yes

And all the while this goes on we are in our own little "must make the papes" worlds, expecting someone else to make a difference.
My summary is this, its not hiphop that is at fault here, its society as a whole. We are a brainwashed mass of consumers, consuming like a cancer on the world because it makes lots of money for the big corporations. The same corporations that feed us the bullshit that fuels our passion to make and spend loads of money.
There is a big market for real hiphop, everyone is crying out for it... whats on offer?
A stupid overhyped "battle" between overexposed fiddy & overinflated Kanye.
The music is out there, its just the the corporate labels aint giving it to you.
