KRS ONE!

Just saw The Teacher put it down in Tampa tonight. His stage presence is still impecable. Dude invited B-boys on the stage to breakdance, local emcees to freestyle and went as far to go into the middle of the crowd and spit lyrics with fury while simultaneously signing autographs. It was bananas. KRS came ready to perform and the crowd received him with open arms. His show was a perfect mix of freestylin', givin' us classics and promoting his new material. Apparently it is the first night of a tour he plans on doing across the country to promote his new album. It was immediately obvious to everyone that we were standing amongst greatness. Special props to Laws (one of Rawkus's own) for handlin' his business opening for the Blastmaster.

This begs the question to my fellow artists....

How much time do you spend developing a unique and entertaining performance for your audience? What emcees do you think are amongst the elite in giving the crowd a talented, memorable and unique performance?

That's hard work... gotta put time in your performance. I appreciate it when artists do that.

Agreed. Clearly a difference between what KRS does and what I have seen by many new cats who just scream on the stage along with a posse of their boys in the background. Mob rhymin' doesn't make you hot. Just loud. lol.

You know KRS is a really smart person who is sort of the godfather of a good hip hop show. He feeds off the audience and gives them what they want. I saw him in SF and he did freestyles on tape recorders people brought to the show. I saw him in Pittsburgh and he gave room for local cats to do their thing. I think a lot of artists are narcissistic and are looking for their own fame, and getting their ups they forget how much it means to the audience to also feel special or feel a part of their show. If it weren't for the audience showing up and paying their dollars the show wouldn't make sense. Hip hop is everyone not just the emcee and the dj you know?

I agree with you. I think Old School heads get this the best because the first emcees were hype men first with the focus being on the deejay. If you weren't getting the crowd involved, you weren't doing ya job. Besides, what feeling is better than having a crowd of people groove with you. Damn, that's a rush!

yea word he's coming down here tonight..I have another show across tonight, so I'm gonna miss him :)

all good though, I've seen and chilled with him a few times before annnd I know he'll be back in a few months lol.

and on the real, a live stage performance is more important than your music, straight up.

Fuck a hype man, people wanna see skills. Studio magic is one thing, but rocking it live and giving a night to the fans they will never forget is something more personal than any words on a disc.

plus they buy shirts when you get off stage!!

No doubt. Next time I swing through Miami to perform we need to get up. I basically do the Miami spoken word circuit, but it would be dope to hit some Hip Hop spots.

So what's the illest thing you cats have ever done on stage to get the crowd hype?
