Lets say you got something playing in the background from like the mid-90s (i.e. Black Moon, Geto Boys, The Nonce, etc.) and some kid is like thats old school. Since it doesn't sound like whats on the radio these days (i.e. Lil Mama, Plies, Da Shop Boyz, etc.). In all honesty, I don't think thats old school. Even though I say that because I'm from that era, I believe its more so golden era. The real old school is before the 80s and so forth in opinion. So, I just wanted to get some feedback from those who know about the golden are compared to some of these late 80s and early 90s babies that may say this. So what do you think?
I do like the idea of "throwback" and I think its still closer to "old school" than we care to admit. Like I said old school is based upon when you came of age...musically and socially. And I think Miss78 is right about putting a 20-25 year range otherwise, you'll hear all kinds of folks calling all kinds of things "Old School"
Co-sign... I consider myself a throwback to the golden era of Hip Hop... I'm noway oldskool... I'm not old enough.... LOL... Well, I don't think I am... ??? ***scratches head***
It's crazy, I heard kids listening to Biggie sayin thats Ol school. Point blank Hip Hop aint the same anymore. People can call it the "Golden era" , Old School I don't think it really matters. Right now we are in the disco era of this music. The Popcorn era. There's still a lot of good music out there being made it's all about balance.
Hey Hey Hey! I happen to like disco music. There was a lot of good music in the Disco era. Yes, I agree it got polluted and you got a lot of crappy stuff from artist who just wanted to cash in. There was lot of good stuff---like Taste of Honey, Chic, and many others. But I get your point--just don't broadly use Disco to make it (smile).

That is exactly the same as Hip Hop today... It is just like disco and if we are not careful... It will follow the same fate as disco....
Yes, you are right, but unlike Disco, I do believe hip-hop artist could rescue hip-hop from this fate. They just have to be willing to focus on the art and not commercial success--at any cost. I don't think it's too late to turn things around. Artist have to stand up to record execs and consumers have to keep their money in their pockets to force a change. Last I checked music sales of Hip-Hop was down better than 50% over the last few years. So perhaps this will force more thoughtful music to materialize...so I would hope.
