A'ight hold on some one explain to me the "Concept" of a 5 mic album?
Didn't I briefly explain it? It was never just about the coldest lyrics, I agree with you. But the albums I mentioned on my list are considered classics in some way, whether it's back in the day to the Neo-Classic albums we had. Tell you the truth, I think a lot of rappers spoil their listeners with constant mixtapes and guest appearances...then their albums become disappointments. I remember reading an interview from Sadat X and Posdnous and they said "the climate to make an album is different now because nobody concentrates on the direction they want to take with the album, so they rely on numerous producers and features to keep up with what is hot now." And you're also right on the timing an album drops, that's why it's so important for emcees to be a) keeping up on current events, or b) ahead of their time.
To PJ: I agree with Ginsu, I think Jada fell short. "Why?" was a good, unexpected joint from Kiss, but then he came out with that one song with Mariah Carey and basically gave Interscope a migraine because he didn't necessarily cross over like they wanted him to.
And I like "Stankonia" because I was diggin' it in 7th grade, but I would say that "Stankonia" was a good album for OutKast to crossover in...to me, it wasn't classic, but it put OutKast into an upper echelon as a force to be wreckoned with.
^^^PJ, you ain't lyin'!!! Have you heard the "God's Gangster" mixtape? It's God's Son, but the beats are samples used from Jay's "American Gangster", and it's BANGIN'!!!
Plus, I ain't gonna lie, I didn't really take rapping seriously until I heard "God's Son"...I think that is an album by NaS a lotta people wouldn't consider classic, but anything that can move me like that is classic to me.
What Im sayin is.. While "Kiss of death" was a beast out here it wasn't a 5 mic album. Neither was the "W" or "Wu-Tang Forever" , or "Hell hath no fury", "Boy in the corner" Or "Below the heavens"! I aint sayin that cuz yall opinion is wrong! But i just feel that the Album has to carry a certain unspoken following to truly be a classic! The 1st time I listened to 36 chambers I was like "WTF is this?!!" But as I listened it grew on me beyond a point where I just liked it ya'dig? Any album where I can learn the words ont the WHOLE album back an forth without even tryin to learn the words!! Thats a classic!!! At least in my eyes.
^^^WHAT? The Clipse didn't gain a loyal unspoken following with "Hell Hath No Fury"??? I agree with you somewhat, but let's be real...I think The Clipse album, Ghostface album are classics because in this state of the music industry, everyone is focusing more on the ringtone and less on the album. "Hell Hath No Fury" didn't sound out of place on any song, they gave you what music they make, instead of a mix of ringtone-buzzing raps. Same thing with Ghostface. So you got see the fact that at least these guys tried to create an "album". Then, "Boy In The Corner" was on some next level sh**!!! Like, who even in their rite mind love UK garage Hip Hop or grime music besides their British fan base? Not me, but "Boy In The Corner" was something that went completely left field.
And, I didn't know for something to be classic you got to know the material front and back...I mean, I OWN the original Purple Tape, "Only Built For Cuban Linx" and I barely know at least half of the tracks word for word, it's still CA-LASSIC!!!
Nawww I aint sayin you gotta know it front in back!! *LOL* I'm just sayin in my eyes I knew an album was a classic when I learned it through osmosis ya'dig?! Like when you listen to that boy so much you know it! Without even knowin you know it!! *LO* I Might be tuff on the "Clipse" cuz I was just never A fan. I don't know they music just didn't say anything to me. And however true about "Boy in the corner" I would call it a "U.K. Classic" Before I just gave it the overall title "Classic".
I have to want to rewind jointz on the album, i have to hear lines and not get tha shyt as soon as i hear it but later in my everday shyt while i aint listening to tha album i get wat was said, joints i have to be able to relate to the song line for line almost, its gotta make me think differently about life as far as skew my perspective a lil more, some trx hav to be the perfect theme music for me doing whatever i do, and i gotta be able to listen to each joint with appreciation for each track....
