Hip Hop is not a culture

came across this post another site... he makes a pretty good point...wanna see what you all think about it.

People really need to stop with this hip hop is a culture BS, and all the "whats the difference between rap and hip hop nonsense.

Cultures create music. Not the other way around

For example, reggae and the jamacians, country and american southern culture, italian culture and opera, east indians and bhangra, hip hop and black/hispanic american street culture..i can list more but i wont.

anyone can listen to any kind of music or make that music yes. but the at the end of the day.. the music is born out of the original culture...

graffiti and break dancing are old styles in hip hop. But Just like in all genres of music there are dances styles etc. But they are replaced by elements and trends. Hip hop is constantly changing and evolving. there are new dances new styles, etc. There are new dances in hip hop now, new styles, new ways of rapping. Break dancing and graffiti arent relevant to the whole scene anymore. it was relevant in the 80's but not now. Kids from the hood dont break dance or graff anymore. There are new dances now. Its 2005

this whole idea of "hip hop elements" and hip hop "culture" is just a corporate idea so that anyone can think they and buy into this so called culture.

There are no set rules or set way to do anything. The music and scene changes as times change.

its all bunch of crap.

the only elements in hip hop are the streets. whatever is coming from the street or what the street is feeling is real hip hop. the rest is constantly changing

ofcourse u will all disagree, becuase we all love the music. that is fine.

but dont think there is some kind of "hiphop culture" cuz really. hip hop culture is just a form of music that comes from black american culture.

There is nothing wrong with identifying with another culture.Let me ask you this Ginsu.Do you consider the Mafia legitimate Italian culture or a corruption of Italian culture? If you think it is real Italian culture then you are wrong.Just because something is done by a people that does not mean it is their culture.Culture is the glue that bonds a people together for survival,if you think I am lying then ask the Japanese if they with ever give up their identity as Japanese.Even though almost every fad, form of music, trend you find anywhere is in Japan including hip hop. That is the difference between people who know themselves and people who are lost.So when people say they grew up on hip hop and that is their culture then they are mentallyinsane.

This is VERY entertaining...I don't have to say anything because the points I was gonna bring up have already been brought up. But I will say this:

Matt, you mentioned that Hip Hop is just a form of music that comes from black american culture. Do you know exactly what black american culture is?

When you post a thread, it always have to deal with ethnicity. And then, for some reason you always sound confused to me. Hip Hop has nothing to deal with ethnicity, it's a universal culture that brings cultures from all over together.

You said "culture" is your upbringing...well, I was brought up into "Hip Hop". You said "sub-culture" is a lifestyle choice...I chose my lifestyle as dedicating myself to "Hip Hop". And you said no one was born Hip Hop or born into Hip Hop, and yet, I'm a prime example, as well as many others.

And technically, it all starts in the home. Believe it or not, gangbanging is a culture. Would you say that kids aren't born into that? There's babies right now whose parents are Bloods or Crips, and the parents are instilling in the minds of their children "gangbanging" culture. Then the kids could be a gangbanger for most of their youths, but what if they decide at age 25 they wanted to change? What if the child end up lucky and gets out of gangbanging and becomes an entrepeneur? He made a transition from the "gangbanging" culture to "corporate" culture, so you can't say no one can't decide if they want to be part of a culture.

So I think you're confused bro. You're right AND wrong. Yes, you are born into a culture, but you CAN decide if you want to be a part of another culture. It all starts from the influence you garner at home, then there's a web of other influences from outside the home that molds and shapes you. The culture from home and other cultures around you can shape you, and Hip Hop happens to be a culture, whether you agree or disagree, it shaped a lot of people from the beginning of Hip Hop until now.

Finally a relevant hip hop discussion gets some responses! I have no opinion on this right now...I just love to see the debate going on and the fact that Matt brought up some issues relating to "hip hop culture" that pushed some people's buttons and got responses! Here's one opinion though....this was a great post Matt!

cant we all just get along ???

Never, there are too many prime cultures, cultures and subcultures for us to ever all agree at once. Whenever it seems like that happened (such as in a family, at work, or in a club/bar) it is..."priceless."

We are all human beings and human beings have been around for how long now ???
