Sharpton Marches For Cleaner Lyrics

2007_05_ARTS_SHARPTONMARCH.pngThe firing of Don Imus has caused many to take a look at language in not only media, but music. As previously mentioned, Al Sharpton is one looking to clean up what we hear, and yesterday he led a march against racist and sexist lyrics, targeting the major labels. Around 400 others joined him in a march around midtown, outside companies like Universal Music Group. The topic reportedly carried over to a private gathering at the Apollo later on, for what would have been James Brown's 74th birthday.

The march, a group which included several of James Brown's children, shouted things like "Decency Now" and "Enough is Enough." Sharpton said, "We're saying there must be one standard. You can't have different standards for different people. Once we finish with the record companies, we must deal with the HBOs and others." He went on to say, “Just like you can’t make records against gays, you can’t make records against Italians or Jews, why do we allow those records?” TMZ (who have video of the march) points out that "the soapboxer has a history of firing off blatantly offensive slurs himself -- for which he's reportedly never apologized."

"The Ceo of Hip Hop" Russell Simmons (and his Hip-Hop Summit Action Network) have been speaking out about making a change as well, and specifically removing these three words from the recording industry - which has gotten responses from just about everyone. But how are the major labels responding? Warner Music Group made the following statement: "We take issues regarding the role of women and minorities in society very seriously. ... We edit explicit lyrics, including those that are the focus of the current public debate, from content."

ehhh....whats next- no more R rated movies?
i believe there is such a thing as ADULT music, just like there is ADULT movies and books.
i have an 8 yr old daughter- we listen 2 classical music, breakbeats, motown, classic rock, etc.
i think parents just like 2 blame issues on other causes- its the parents who are allowing kids 2 listen 2 shit they arent supposed 2 b and watch programs and movies they arent posed 2 b.

It's hard to do when it's on the radio all damn day and T.V. ... I have kids and I try my best... But they still hear it and see it... There is adult music and T.V.... But, it's in plain site of the kids now... That is the problem... Kids don't have to sneak around to hear it... You can't blindfold your kids... When I was growing up, it wasn't like that...

How can Russell Simmons talk about changing what people say on records when he was running Def Jam he had some of the most ignorant rap artist making records that was going plat or gold wit all that hardcore shit!!!!!!!! And all of these black wannabe leaders did not stand up when ABC news interviewed those white girls making hate music towards blacks. They are signed to MCA and their records are selling out and one of their songs was at the top of the billboard.

Hip-Hop artists are the soap box leaders of their community wether they like it or not should you not have a voice above and beyond practical reason/ the life of guns murder and mass mayhem are not always seen by everyone the self genocide of people in general is some real shit enforced by " SILENT WEAPONS FOR QUIET WARS" hip-hop is not the scape goat it is the savior what message would you like to send to the troops meaning listining audience on some real shit you wanna sell recods, get rich, its not the negativeness of the lyrics but the conotation in wich the damage is to be afflicted on its easy to shoot a pedestrian but cats dont rap about mudrering, cops, ATF, FBI etc., the crack dope game is truly fukin up alot of people in all walks of life but artists still take glory in it for not being considerd not REAL, or the sake that the hustle is cool incarceration has never been cool and is some very depreesing shit but this is only my opinion it may or may not make since but 4 me hip hop is KING Peacze!!!
