My personal opinion, I think that when Lil Kim and Foxy Brown came out, it made it acceptable to be very feminine, which was cool, but when they started dressing very provocotively and scantily clad, the "industry" saw how much attention and record sales they were bringing in and tried to mimic this trend. Now comes the Trinas and the Khias( my neck my back) and being slutty became the norm. Lyrics became less important. Then comes the over use of half naked babes and such, and BET showing uncut videos, and sex seems to be what is in the forefront, especially as a femal in hip-hop. So now we are at the point where that is what is expected of a female artist, and if you ain't willing to show yo ass, they pass. I think that is bout to change though
I think there need to be more female exce's in the music business because these men running labels are just fucking all these chicks who are chasing a dream and when they done with them they kick them to the curb. It's sad!!!!!!!
A lot of sistas just try to capitalize on their assets. Now since Hip Hop is or should I say rap is such a big business everybody is trying to get into the game. For example a chic like Bufy the body who is really not that cute or talented can make an ASS load of money in the game thanks to 85%er such as 50 cent and the rest of G unit. The mentality dead are trying to eat at the expense of our children .
I'll tell you why. It's because sexuality in the industry has always been associated with your gender. Blame that on your predecessors. It's not known for a woman to produce intellect without showing off her ass and tits. It's just being real. It sucks, I know. Look at Beyonce. Her songs may promote female independence but she's still relying on male presence because she's showing some kind of sexuality in her videos. What to do? Keep pressing. Why hasn't their been a female president yet? Because society views women as submissive subjects. You're not and you have to find a way to market that without overdoing it. Chyna Whyte, Da Brat and Ms. Rage overdid it. They had a male mystique to their persona that helped men relate to them as one of their own. Look at the clothes they wear. It's more of a male image projection. So, once one of you finds that thin line, it'll reap plenty of benefits....lemme know!
i feel ya,my girl shawty doo wop (my artist) represent true hip-hop,real life, not talking dirty 2 gain exposer
check her video out on "myspace.com/torrybarnette" in 24hrs. i think you are right,we need more weman exceutives 2 sign "em" also, men dominate and exploit them 2 crush there dreams in tha future...
i dont even know....but shots to jean grae though...one of my top female emcees. I think MC Lyte needs to come and lay some serious lyricism on the female party yall. I love em if there is substance. I think there are some real good female emcees out there that just haven't been put on blast and given a shot. I hope the female emcee evolution continues and one day soon we will have a group of female artist that will definitely hold it down on a real....true..honest..hip hop level. Peace and respect
Cause there are more females, that make it harder for the ones that try to be taken serious, that dont give a fuck and just use what they got bodywise instead of skills wise.
Its marketing, media, the majority of "rappers" portraying women as pieces of meat and whatever not.
But i truly believe its those women that go that route, that make it the hardest for others to even wanna try and succeed with their skills. Cause i know enough female mc's that will rip any male mc, they just dont get a chance and get discouraged by this shit.
On the other hand, i dont think its hard at all if you got real skills it shouldnt be any harder than any male mc out there with skills. With the proper network, connections, right percentage of "luck" etc, its the same for a female grinding in the game as for a male. There are just not as much women that wanna step into a "men's game" and go through the struggle. Same question as why there arent as many male beauticians without being gay....lol. No seriously, the female also has to be able to handle the struggle, the prejudice, the sexual "harrassment", all of that shit, and stay focused on her goal. I noticed there just arent many women that can just ignore all the bullshit and stay focused on their passion for the mic.
I feel liek the more female emcees get taken advantage to concentrate on their looks more than their skills.....the lower the standard will get for them. And that sucks because, there are some ill female emcees out there that can rip alot of cats out there. Of course, Jean Grae was mentioned. I mean, you got Shawnna from DTP who can spit for real (check out Infamous Syndicate from way back in the day). There's Apani B., Medusa, Mia X (don't sleep on her, she got some skills on the low), T-Love, Bahamadia, and whole lot of them that don't get mentioned as much. But the marketing of it boils down to sex and attracting the eye un the corporate. And if it attracts the eye then the ears will listen; regardless if she has skills or not which is messed up.
