First this is by no means an attack. I am black and Joe Con who I produce with is white/crew.
My question is how do people of color feel when white people try to tell you what is or isnt HipHop after all this is a culture that arose from people of color.
an example is this white cat around the way saying what I/my crew is weak becuase it esentually is positive/concious music. He on the other hand is into the "gangsta shit".
It seems he thinks to rep HipHop/Black culture you have to be hard, sag your pants, and act other stereotypes we are faced with
To me this is subconcious racism, does he really think all blacks sell drugs, act a certain way, and bang.
He even made the comment that if you have a college education then you cant be HipHop. This is like some COINTELPRO shit.
He is adding to the destruction of my community by reinforcing negative stereotypes.
So enough with an example , do you think a white persons opinion on what HipHop is valid regardless of their commitment.
Im going to say yes but as i told one cat my weakest shit is better than your best just by default
Hey Joe this is Dwayne from Kala Nation cultural movement.I think you've observed what a majority of us have been seeing for the past decade.Hip hop as moved away from us.Now let me say hip hop was never really true black culture, but an expression of black street culture a sub culture that helped us cope with the cut off of our African culture and heritage during slavery. All of the nicknames and street names are a questfor grandure.ex Melvin Watts becomes 'Grandmaster Melle Mel'When LL coolJ said Im bad he was talking about ruling the world with his ryhmes. We had this and most rappers loved and cared about their community. This is when 80% of all hip hop was listened to by us and our latino brother community in New York. Now let me say I think Eminem is one of the best MCs I have ever heard. He has alot of support in the hip hop nation. So why do whites think that they need to always patronise black rappers? He is better than almost all of the black rappers. Why isthe black rapper the only spokesman for the black race?It is clearly not talent. Why do whites insist on seeing black on black violence on tv over some beats? Why is black ignorance and simplicity such a draw to them? Those of us over the age of 30 know this all to well.White supremecy has taken over hip hop and reared it ugly head once again. This is high tech neo slavery.I f you are not black then you dont know what the hell im talking about so be quiet. If you are black and you dont know what I am saying you are a buffon and a fool. This is a war! These blogs are ouronly prayer i a world of powerful white men who want to take everything from us am I lying? talk to me.
Peace
u sound like a black panther...more-so a black supremisist, hip-hop is no where near racist towards african americans in the way you put it, man come on
No my good young brother! Iam not a racist please read my blogs to find out more of what I believe.Idont think you remember Heavy D had a song out called Black coffee, about two years later goodie mob came up with Black skin. Both songs were a celebration of black women and youngmales love for them. These two songs were considered marginal because it delt with race. You see young blood what kept our community safe and better even during slavery was black love. That is why we went to Harlem. That is why we built buisinesses raised families and for years our community was the moral authority in America.Music played a big part in this. Our writers and artist cared about their people.Muhammed Ali cared about his people Dr Martin Luther King cared so did Malcom X and others. Our history is rooted in a common struggle. That means no matters what part of the country you are from or what your skin complexion is orhow much money you earn weare still a people.Hip hop when it was small reflected these values. Now I am offened that you call me a black supremecist.I detest racist weather black or white.I hate white supremecy which is a belief that white people are superior to people of color. This is the biggest problem we as good Americans face, because it will ultimately lead to a race war in this country as sure as Im sitting hear.If a music(hip hop)constantly shows us is the worst form of life materialstic thugs immoral, violent, ignorant irresponsible, you tell me that is not being racist especially when it is whites who are consuming this filth, and all goos hip hop is ignored.Because white supremecy has found its way into hip hop.By the way my favorite MC is Eminem.Let us not be enemies brother write me back
Ps Can you draw me some cartoons?
A lot of good points have been made, so I'm not going to try not to rehash anything. The dumbing down of music isn't all contributed to white people. Of the local cats I've found online (the scene here is pretty much non-existent due to ignorant club owners and booking agents thinking when someone mentions hip hop they're going to bring guns and hoes in their venue), there's a fair share of white cats rapping about they're thugs, pimps, or their rims, grills... but 9 out of 10 non-whites are doing the same if not worse. I'm a human jumble, so don't take this as a white opinion. There is (proudly) black owned radio here who claims to not support any music degrading women or the culture, which apparently means just not playing those specific songs from the artists. They run ads with major artists saying "you heard it first on local radio", but if you hear a local track on there you'd have to be walking around with headphones listening to the station all day everyday for a very long time. The next big station that plays "hip hop" (urban pop in actuality) is white owned and a clear channel affiliate. They play the exact same tracks (minus Sunday gospel and the occasional funk). As far as I can see... everyone is ruining the culture trying to bank on it while not worrying the effect it's going to have in peoples' outlook. I just wonder where the percentage figures come from. Makes me picture Wal-Mart, FYE, or Sam Goody hitting a button on the register when cds are purchased to designate whether it was purchased by a white or non-white. Most opinions don't matter... every race is contributing to the spread of ignorant urban pop equally, as for non-ignorant music... who knows. Another thing I love is the "my best friends are" comments. Some of my best friends are human. Most of the people I associate with make music... I try to keep away from dumb shit, but thanks to media and my being involved in hip hop, not going to happen.
The original question was related to whites defining what HipHop is not if they are a part of it. I never took anything away from white people. im rasta , Its all one love. I just asked regarding things for example. There is a b-girl crew here. sisterz of the underground, but aint no sistaz in it. Like my example just the whole keep it real thing, overdone and then redefining HipHop which I find is being done by fans that now rap. HipHop before anything is an oral tradition, so can a oral tradition be copmmunicated authenticly by people who , have play a part but didnt create the foundation.
As I said before yes, but HipHop is something that requires association with the ego, that being said can Whites pass on Black founded culture accurately
alot of people now adays are ignorant to cultural movements created because the true face has been replaced.
basically my point was that every race has its misconceptions and cats raised on Empty-V/BET generally have no room to speak when in the presence of someone raised in hip hop. Ignorance knows no color.
What if you got a degree you can't be hip-hop what??????????? Fuck that with a fist in the ass. And yo. You can't parpare this shit to cointelpro what j edgar did was some real bad shit. Now to my point. At times it seem that so white back packers know more about hip-hop than blacks folk do.......... I have no problem with that but if you see some white dude with a wife beater that listen to jezzy all day talkin' bout hip-hop that's a no no. I dope cracker the word cracker in my poems a lot but a cracker is just a slave master that mis leads the people for there own good. So I not race bangin' when I drop it. Crackers are black and white. I don't want any bracker talkin bad or sayin' the wrong rhing about our culture. But if you are white it doesn't matter we all in this together. -iz
don't neccesarily think that ur example got nutha to do with such cat being a whitie or not ,it is pure igorancia as we say back home.if u love&live hip hop ,if u breath it , u think it ,u feel it ..then ur hip- hop .
tons of black cats n dudes listen to queen, rolling stones ,it doesn't make them a coconut.
la ignorancia es uno de los males mayores del mundo, conocimiento es poder, power to delevop yourself into a better u .peace outta hon
I started building rhymes and language puzzles in 2nd grade. If rap didn't exist, I would have invented it. Rap delivery existed for centuries before hip hop ever did. The notion that I'm stealing a black art form doesn't even make me blink.
I think that mixing up rap music with the fact that black people in the US are still recovering from the slavery, systemic repression, and self-destructive culture that were forced upon them by White folks -- not just Americans, white folks from all over the world -- and mixing up rap music with the fact that there is still an undeclared war on black men in the United States, popularly known as the War on Drugs and the War on Crime, is a mistake. Korzybski would have called that a "category error".
It's like saying 9-11 happened because of the stereotypes in the Disney flick Aladdin.
Depends on what you mean by mixing up. If you are attempting to explain subject matter than the references can be very applicable.
I like what you have to say about the orgins of rap though. I think you're on the money there. Often times we forget that Rap is short for Rhytmn and Poetry. This is why I often cite Gil Scott Heron as being the first "recorded rapper" as we know it.
