I'm from SC originally, but lived in Raleigh (knew a couple RAW emcees down there, too) for a couple years before movin' to the Chi (where I've been for 10 years now) and I think the Chi is gonna be pickin' up a lot of speed this summer. Not so much because of Common, Kanye & Twista who do all have nice projects out/coming out, but because Interscope, Atlantic and a few other labels have been signin' a lot of artists in the Chicago for the past couple years and I know first hand that a lot of heat will be droppin' from Chicago artists on several majors, and if any of these artists get the major online and offline promotion that they need, shit's gonna hit the fan. See, like a lot of cities that haven't been the actual "hub" for Hip-Hop before, Chicago has a very thriving underground Hip-Hop scene that doesn't get a lot of mainstream exposure outside of the Midwest. Too many cities have SERIOUS underground artists that aren't known at all in other cities (even cities nearby). But with the internet becoming so readily accessible to almost everyone, many artists are building huge fanbases online and networking between cities with other artists, bands, even from other genres. The music industry is changing very rapidly and the power structure hasn't changed as significantly as most artists would like, but I believe there's way more opportunity for artists to make money if they learn the biz and move on what they learn. I see sooooo much going on here as far as various networking events, seminars, open mics (all over the city every night of the week!), concerts from indie labels and just a lot of Hip-Hop culture here. I'm sure that people everywhere will be introduced to several new household names from Chicago before the year is out. but I guess that remains to be seen.
Other than Chicago, though, I've heard some heat online comin' out of Philly, Baltimore, DC, NY, Seattle, T-Dot.....I even heard a dude from England who was killin' a nice ass beat with the English accent and all, but the wordplay was ill and I was pretty impressed. I don't think the US is really ready to let any foreign rappers blow up huge here. Just seein' a lot of people's reaction to Jin, made me see that, but who knows what the future holds? Watch out for the Cadre Crew outta the Chi!
