After reading Dredi's last thread, it occured to me that one of our biggest problems in the forum is that the Hip Hop Dead arguement is indeed the most popular topic in Hip Hop right now and because of the lack of topic organization here, it continues to be rehashed. Consolidate that discussion in one thread and my guess is that the amount of negativity Dredi speaks of feeling will drop dramatically.

Here's a quick score card for newbies...

Is Hip Hop Dead?
No, as long as one person believes in the culture it will never disappear.

Whites in Hip Hop?
Been there since the beginning, make up the buying public, they have a say. Current mainstream Hip Hop imagery is majorly influenced by their taste.

Hip Pop vs Hip Hop?
No such distinction. Its all Hip Hop, just different flavors. The current balance in the Hip Hop industry is skewed toward Southern dance tracks versus conscioius Hip Hop music and lyrics.

Origins of the Rap element of Hip Hop?
Debateable. Some cite Spoken Word others cite the first Emcees. The influence of both is undeniable, though.

The Female Emcee?
Not extinct, just not getting airplay. Still a male dominated audience so female lyricists have not been blending into the mainstream pot well. They have gone the route of the conscious emcee, labled underground and geared toward a more narrow market segment.

Rawkus 50?
Best idea to happen in a long time. Rawkus 50 is uber talented and another promotion will happen in 2008. MotownPride will be the first Spoken Word Artist to crack the 50. (Okay, I just made that up, but it could happen...lol)
