Almost Famous in the US, But a Hip Hop Star Overseas???
We're sorry, but this discussion has just been closed to further replies.
I have a question… These independent Hip Hop acts that go overseas and do shows… They perform in front of crowds of hundreds of Europeans. They do interviews and promote their music… I was just having a discussion with some one about this and it got me thinking. Europeans think these artist are stars… When they are nobodies here in the states…
They are pretty big stars when they go overseas… True???
Do they get the same kind of love in the states? (I know for a fact that they don’t… )
Why don’t they get the same kind of love here?
Why does the independent artist make a bigger impression in Europe then here?
Different Culture and Moral value. Materilism. Capitalism. There are so many factors to why acts who choose to go overseas are recognized more than in there own home. Maybe the answer is as old as The Bible. A prophet is not accepted in in own home and such. Or maybe it the way music is valued here in the states. While Andy Warhol did great thing for art his most damn theory seems to be the most enduring. It seems here in the US the idea that that anything used to make money is art is the main reason why these happen.
because overseas people are more open minded and keep the real elements of music more than here in the united states.. it's a shame to say but overseas have always been good for underground artists to make it...i got alot of buzz overseas off of myspace and alot of moves i made was because of that.. if you are really looking to make moves i think overseas is the way to go and then come back to the states to market yourself...
because we are open minded enogh to give anyone a chance.just like most old skool artists get forgotten about in the u.s,we still show love when they come over here.your loss is our gain.
But is that really it… Because I’m starting to think that there is a misconception over in Europe… I’m starting to think that Europeans might think that these artist are popular here in the states too… When they are nobodies… Or almost famous… Feel me? Because I keep hearing from Europeans “If they weren’t big in the US, they wouldn’t be big here..” … I laugh every time I hear that… Because, it’s not true… So, I wonder… What is really going on?
there has to be a misconception. especially if there's artists overseas who can make just as good of a living touring their own countries. thats the thing that confuses me.
True... I know when I was in Germany, I heard and saw a few German crews that were pretty dope... But, I wonder if they got the love that Americans did... You know? But more then half of these indie artist that go over to tour in Europe, get nowhere the kind of love here in the states as they do overseas... I have heard people bring up names of some artist and I think to myself "are you serious?"... LOL... They couldn't headline a show over here, no one would show up... No one has ever heard of them.. LOL
You could have mentioned my name Kas, it was me he had this discussion with.
and i still disagree, maybe from MY own point of view being in Holland which is a real small country.
You americans talk about Europe as we are one country, we arent, we all have our different cultures and languages and crowds.
Its true in ways that there is a lot more respect and love for real hiphop, instead of just the commercial shit out there, BUT there is also not alot of money over here, so they will never book artists that dont have somewhat of a name already in the US. Kas says those artists are nobodies, if they were truly nobodies, they would never get booked over here, simply cause if they are nobodies, we wouldnt get their music over here in the first place to create a fanbase so that promoters would be interested in booking them.
I deal with promoters over here, I deal with artists over here and in the US. From MY point of view, the artist has to have at least a name for himself before ANY promoter decides to put money down, not having the assurance of selling tickets. Even big artists like Ghostface Killah makes a loss for these promoters, on his shows. (I know this for a fact...) so they would never book "nobodies" over here. You have no idea how much loss is made on big artists, so let alone "nobodies"....
You can disagree with it all you want, but I live here, and thas what I experience every day in this business.
If Europe would book nobodies all the time, ALL of my US friends who are rappers and singers and what not, would have been on tours already, but nobody is interested in them cause nobody knows them.
I have this conversation with a lot of artists when I interview them, that Europe gives them a lot more love, which is also cause we appreciate it a lot more when artists come over here, hiphop over here is more "alive". BUT, its also cause we dont get alot over here, US is spoiled, we arent.
But next to that, we get all the pollution from the US media and what just as big. And as soon as there is some hype going on over there, shit spreads like a virus over here also.
I also wanna address that in my country, music doesnt sell shit, unless you are some white dutch singer. You cant possibly become a millionaire over here on some music shit, simply cause there is no money. This country is smaller than NYC. So you can only do so much shows. If you rap in Dutch, you are definitely limited, for some reason Dutch wont do across borders, unlike maybe French hiphop or something.
They get love, but Americans get way more love, simply cause they are "from america".
If you rap in English over here, people always got shit to whine about "the accent is wack", "they tryna sound like such n such" so its never good enough. Not to mention that there hasnt been ANY dutch rapper that raps in english that ever had a hit over here, thats just the rappers that use the native language here.
Its just my experience, again, people can disagree with it, but fact remains, you don't live here, you don't see it or experience it every day.
Sidenote: Today I ran into this guy who works with the biggest hiphop promoters over here, he filmed me interviewing Lords of the Underground a while ago. During that conversation we also spoke about why the love over here in Europe is so much bigger. And what the difference is in that love between the US and Europe. Once i get the dvd from him, I will try and upload that piece to youtube.
(It was more "LOTUG interviews Pay though".....lol)
Again, just my two cents..
PS sorry that my 2 cents were more 20 euros (about 30 dollars roughly) LOL
